WE DIG - Earth Inc.

Rooftop Swim Spa

spa-ift-Had fun closing down part of condo town on King Street West today to lift a custom self-contained stainless steel swim spa onto a penthouse terrace we are working on. Months of design and planning have lead to this moment. So glad it went smoothly.

Vermillion is the new green

2013 marks the 15th year of earth inc. and to celebrate this momentous occasion we decided to have some fun with our branding. Over the last few months we have been working with signed. studio to create our new look. We love our new logo, it’s clean simple and bold. The colour is inspired by the vibrant orangy-red hue of a perennial plant called Castilleja, commonly known as Indian paintbrush. Hope you like it!

The Earth Inc. Boler

When Earth, Inc. was looking for a way to bring the design studio closer to the job site, a Boler trailer seemed like the perfect fit. These classic pieces of Canadiana were designed in 1968 by Ray Olecko of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He teamed up with a septic tank manufacturer to rough out the original fibreglass prototype, it was designed to accommodate his family, and included a kitchen, small table, plenty of counter and cabinet space, two sofa beds (to sleep four), fresh water tanks and a detachable awning.

Our Boler trailer was purchased from a hunter who had used it as his wilderness base camp in northern Ontario, so needless to say it took a bit of work to make it fit our needs. We stripped it down, patched it up, repainted it, rewired it, redid the upholstery and got it road-worthy.

Now it’s a great place to hold client meetings or impromptu site briefings, and the idea of breathing new life into a classic design like this is at the core of what Earth, Inc. does.

Have a look at the before and after shots, and stop by and say hi or wave if you see us on the road.

Chelsea Flower Show

We had a great time attending the annual Chelsea Flower Show this past weekend in London, UK. The weather was perfect, the Pimm’s were refreshing and the gardens were brilliant. Some say the Chelsea Flower Show is like the Paris Fashion Week of garden design, thousands of people attend each year to watch for new emerging gardening trends. One thing we noticed was a trend back towards organic free form planting which involves a curated mixture of diverse species but planted to mimic nature. The towering London Plane trees provided great shade from the scorching sun, however, they were also pollenating like mad causing everyone to sneeze and cry. Our top two favorite gardens were The World Vision Gardens by Flemons Warland Design with a corten steel ripple pool right at the centre, and The M&G Garden by Andy Sturgeon with its core-drilled stone walls. The most innovative installation by far was The Westland Magical Garden by Diarmuid Gavin, a massive scaffolding pyramid comprising of seven planting terraces. We were especially proud to see The RBC Blue Water Garden representing our home and native land. All in all, it was a fantastic trip packed with inspiration!

IDS Award

Just want to say thanks to everyone at IDS12 for all the kind words and recognition. We were thrilled to receive the silver award for exhibit design!

You can see some more images in our portfolio, also watch this cool time-lapse video of the construction.

We have long been fascinated by the Japanese technique of Yakisugi, also known as Shou-sugi-ban (translates roughly to: burnt cedar board). Yakisugi has been used for centuries in Japan as a way to seal cedar from rot and make it more fire resistant. This makes it an ideal finish in the landscape. Check out some progress shots of a 7th floor condo terrace we are building that incorporates several stationary and moveable Yakisugi screens. Stay tuned for more photos as the project nears completion.

Also take a look at this video showing the unique challenges of building 7 stories up.

Dustin’ the Trophy Shelf

Earth Inc was honoured last night at the Landscape Ontario Awards of Excellence. We were the proud recipients of three awards of excellence, as well as the coveted Casey Van Maris Award recognizing innovative and unique design.

IDS 2012

Party Time!

Last week was our end of season party, and what a great season it has been. We would like to thank all of our clients, crews and suppliers for making it all possible. We love what we do, and what a way to celebrate it. It’s amazing how festive our office can become with the help of hundreds of mini lights and tons of candles. At times the space was so full of people there was a risk we might not be able to get to the bar! Unfortunately, we were so busy having fun we forgot to take many photographs. However, we think this one of the McMartin bros fishing for the last beer is worth sharing.
